Durban has always been considered the most laid back city in South Africa. Although behind the scenes there is a machine at work. Durban is the busiest port in Southern Africa. This fact should not discourage vacationers, as Durban knows how to have fun. It boasts pristine, world-class surfing and bathing beaches, five star hotels and restaurants and the nightlife is on par with the best the world has to offer. The greatest fact though for the vacationer is that it knows how to have fun.

The Outstanding Achievement award in the category of Marine Parks Award by the Themed Entertainment Association in California was handed to Ushaka Marine World recently. Ushaka, named after the King of the Zulus boasts a 5 star entertainment paradise for the whole family on vacation. A world class marine world with dolphin and seal shows, fun water rides, an interesting an unusual aquarium based on a full scale model of a shipwreck, shops, five star restaurants and much more. All this plus it is located on the beach near the harbour entrance.

A mere stroll up the path and you are at the start of the famous Golden Mile. Five star hotels on the beachfront, how more laid back can you get. North Beach the home of the Gunston 500 one of the worlds top surfing contests is held every year in July. All the beaches have safe bathing and lifeguards in attendance. Theme parks and restaurants abound. Beyond North Beach is a newly built Las Vegas style casino and entertainment complex with activities for everyone.

Next is Blue Lagoon need I say more (see heading)? Past Blue Lagoon is holiday rental paradise. Hotels, timeshare, rentals bed & breakfasts are in no short supply in Umhlanga Rocks (pronounced umshlanga), Ballito and so it goes on for miles and miles. This is called the Dolphin Coast for obvious reasons.

Venturing to the harbour area you will find Wilsons Wharf next to the largest sugar terminals in South Africa if not Africa. From Wilsons Wharf the vacationer and family can take harbour and sea trips by boat or just relax at the number of restaurants while the children play in the paddleboats. It also hosts an interesting arts and craft market.

I have only touched on the many activities that Durban has to offer. I suggest you try Durban for your next vacation destination. How the locals actually work there beats me but they do.
