Hurricanes and Football Schedules

Late hurricane seasons can adversely affect professional football schedules and often football games are canceled, rescheduled or the location changes. During the 2005 Atlantic tropical hurricane season we saw one stadium in New Orleans become unusable and the team had to go all the way into Houston and share their facilities.

During the 2006 Atlantic tropical hurricane season we should expect similar events to take place and be ready for such events. No one knows exactly when or where a hurricane will strike until the season is well underway and the hurricanes have been adequately tracked by the supercomputers and the weather satellites from NOAA.

Often small businesses are hurt in such regions due to changes in football schedules due to hurricanes. They are expecting additional people in the city in restaurants, hotels and shopping districts. They often schedule extra people and buy extra inventory to handle the crowds. If the football games are rescheduled or change locations all that preparation and inventory becomes pure costs and hurts the businesses.

Many cities in many areas in different towns rely on professional football games for their income. When that income does not appear, it is a double whammy considering that hurricanes often also cause damage and curtail future sales until everything is brought back to normal. Please consider this 2006.
