Las Vegas Golf

The city of Las Vegas is fast becoming well known, for not only its casinos but also for its golf. Today, there are at least 50 golf courses in and around Las Vegas, though not all of them are operational; some are still under construction. This number is indeed significant, in view of citys half-million population. This probably has to do with the fact that the tourist traffic in this city has been on the rise.

In the year 2004, around 37 million tourists visited the city and around 22,000 conventions were held there. For a growing number of visitors, golf is an obvious choice; it is a year round sport in Las Vegas. It rains for around six weeks in a year in this city, but even during that time you can play golf. In fact, there is only one week wherein the average person cannot play golf in Las Vegas.

Almost all the major pro tours, such as PGA, LPGA and SPGA, have their annual tournaments here. During the winter one can start playing golf at noon. During the summers--from June to September--one can start playing early in the morning and enjoy some picturesque golf courses designed by some of the most well-known golf course designers in the world.

However, with the growing popularity of this game, the cost of playing it has also gone up. Until a few years ago you could play at some of the old golf courses for around 10 to 12 dollars, with or without a cart. But nowadays there are very few golf courses where this fee is less than a hundred dollars. That has deterred many of the local residents from taking up this game.
