Fish Oil Recommended: What You Should Know

Fish Oil Recommended as Omega-3 Supplement Fish Oil Dosage

Omega-3 supplementation is important in the average diet, because most people do not eat enough fish. Fish oil is recommended as the best known source of the omega-3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA. Flax seed oil supplements contain the third type of omega 3's called ALA, but this ALA must then be converted to DHA and EPA by the body for use by the brain, heart and other organs and systems of the body.

This conversion does not always take place smoothly, especially in those with subpar health or older folks, which is why DHA and EPA should be obtained directly through a high quality fish oil recommended product.

A specific fish oil recommended product from us because of its high DHA and EPA content is Hoki fish oil from New Zealand, available world-wide now.

Fish Oil Dosage

Doctors do not always agree on the appropriate fish oil dosage.

The dosage amount may vary from two grams per day to five grams per day. There have been no major side effects reported by exceeding dosages of five grams. Fish oil is a natural substance, not a chemical and as long as the oil is pharmaceutical grade or molecularly distilled to remove impurities, the most common side effect that may be noted is a fishy aftertaste (usually prevented by taking with food) and in rare instances diarrhea. In the rare instance where diarrhea is experienced, doctors recommend lowering the fish oil dosage.

However, one possible thing to be cautious of is that fish oil is a blood thinner and, therefore, people who are already using other blood thinners should let their doctor know of their intend to try a fish oil product.

The oil of the Hoki fish is our primary fish oil recommended product, and the one we use ourselves, because of its naturally high levels of DHA and EPA omega-3 fatty acids and because the Hoki fish swims in the exceptionally clean waters off the Southern coast of New Zealand in deep, cold waters.

Many fish commonly used for fish oil supplements have been over-fished or are known to swim in habitats polluted by mercury and other industrial wastes. The recommended fish oil dosage does not change depending on the type of fish, but fish oils from Cod and other commonly used fish may contain impurities and even unsafe levels of mercury.

Some supplement companies are selling shark liver oil, which is a fish oil recommended rarely, if ever, for human consumption, because studies have shown that shark livers contain some of the highest noted levels of mercury contamination. Shark oil is not a good source of omega-3.

For those who choose a Hoki fish oil supplement from New Zealand, fish oil recommended dosage will vary from product to product.
