White Noise

There are different kinds of noise with distinct frequency properties that are categorized by color, namely: white noise, pink noise, brown noise, blue noise, and gray noise. Below is an overview of white noise.

Generally speaking, white noise pertains to the full scale of sound frequencies a human ear can perceive blended together with one accord.

White noise is a synthesis of sound frequencies in equal levels. It is a very tranquil sound that is relaxing and pleasant to the ears of any individual.

A number of people say it is akin to the sound of the rain or the ocean waves or to the rustling leaves of a tree.

White noise offers countless benefits. The noise comes in different forms that serve different purposes. Some white noise sounds work better than others for particular uses. Different people may find some white noise sounds more pleasing than others.

Infants are known to enjoy higher pitches, such as the white noise of a vacuum cleaner or hair blow dryer. People with inner ear disorders (such as tinnitus and hyperacusis), on the other hand, find white noise produced by the flow of water in the shower more soothing. Some people who prefer lower and mellower tones find white noise from machines (such as fans) an ideal sound masker.

White noise is said to have a more calming effect than music, because unlike music, white noise does not add to the clamor of the auditory environment. Instead, white noise contains equal frequencies of all sounds. This steadiness and monotony can more effectively sift and hide distracting noises. The soothing and constant sound of white noise helps promote a peaceful mood that helps many people loosen up and even fall asleep, when necessary.
